Gérard Garouste

  • 09/11/2022
  • NEWS & INFO

The Centre Georges Pompidou is holding a retrospective exhibition devoted to Gérard Garouste, one of the most important contemporary French painters, born in 1946, who is a figurationist without concession.Gérard Garouste was a student at the Beaux-arts de Paris at the end of the 1960s, and his reading of Marcel Duchamp’s interviews with Pierre Cabanne prompted him to defy the ban on painting at a time when conceptual practices were the order of the day. Thus, he became a painter, in the most traditional sense of the term, focusing on technique, which he never ceased to perfect, by observing the masters in the Louvre: Poussin, El Greco, Tintoretto…In the 1980s, he began to create large paintings under the sign of Greek mythology, to which he superimposed his personal mythology around the figures of the Classic, the Indian, the Apollonian and the Dionysian, which, according to him, is in all of us.Alongside 120 major paintings, often of very large format, the exhibition also gives a place to the sculpture and graphic work. This exhibition allows us to grasp the full richness of Gérard Garouste’s unclassifiable career, whose life of study, but also of madness, and his enigmatic work, feed off each other in a striking dialogue. With his large figurative canvases, the artist revisits the history of art through the genres of painting, which he seeks to exhaust. The exhibition dedicated to him follows step by step the path and the personal mythology of one of the most important French painters.Museum : Centre Georges PompidouAddress : Place Georges Pompidou 75004 ParisPrice : 15€.Schedule: open from Wednesday to Tuesday from 11am to 9pm.Metro : Hôtel de Ville station lines 1 and 11               Châtelet station lines 1, 4, 7, 11 and 14RER : Châtelet-les Halles lines A, B, D

EXHIBITION ON CHARLES RAY

  • 08/04/2022
  • NEWS & INFO

A major figure in the art of our time, the American sculptor Charles Ray (born in 1953), is making cultural headlines: in dialogue with the artist, the Bourse de Commerce-Pinault Collection is devoting a major exhibition to him.The works of Charles Ray are part of a deep knowledge of the history of classical art and Antiquity.Whether the work is produced in steel, cement, fiberglass, polished steel, or aluminum, Charles Ray’s practice calls upon various processes, between artisanal work and cutting-edge industrial technology, always concealing its sometimes dizzying complexity. and the often very long time of its elaboration. His artistic practice places the question of space at the center of his research and offers the viewer an experience of the relationship to reality, more complex, more mysterious. The artist also has fun “making us look twice”. Even more: as much by their “strange familiarity”, their ambiguity, as by their unspeakable precision that looks like prowess, Charles Ray’s works destabilize, as if under the effect of a hallucination, almost managing to shake the space around them. they, reality itself, silently bringing the observer into a form of fiction. The exhibition will end on June 06, 2022Trade exchange: 2 rue Viarmes 75001 ParisHours: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.Closed Tuesdays and May 01Price: 14€Metro: line 1 station Louvre6Rivoliline 4 station Les Hallesline 7, 11 and 14 Châtelet station

L’exposition Vermeer

  • 02/05/2017
  • NEWS & INFO

“The Sphinx of Delft”: coined by French journalist and art critic Théophile Thoré-Bürger when he revealed Vermeer to the world late in the 19th century, this famous expression has served mainly to promote an enigmatic image of the painter. The myth of the solitary genius has done the rest. Yet Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675) did not attain his level of creative mastery in isolation from the art of his time.Through comparisons with the works of other artists of the Golden Age—among them Gerrit Dou, Gerard ter Borch, Jan Steen, Pieter de Hooch, Gabriel Metsu, Caspar Netscher, and Frans van Mieris—the exhibition brings to light Vermeer’s membership of a network of painters specializing in the depiction of everyday life while admiring, inspiring, and vying with each other. This dynamic rivalry played its part in the remarkable quality of their respective works; in this context we might be tempted to think of Vermeer as just one painter among others, but in point of fact this reciprocal contact tended to render his temperament sharper and more individual.   Practical information From February 22 to May 22, 2017 Location Hall Napoléon, under the Pyramid Admission €15 (permanent collections + exhibitions) Opening hours Every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., except Tuesday. Late-night openings until 9:45 p.m.on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays until May 22, 2017. Le Hall Napoléon is at 16 minutes from the hotel Bellechasse Saint-Germain.

Alphonse Donatien de Sade (1740–1814) completely transformed the history of both literature and the arts, first as an underground writer, and later by becoming a veritable legend in his lifetime. The Divin Marquis’s work is a radical questioning of issues of limits, proportion, excess, notions of beauty, ugliness, the sublime and the body image. He takes the way we look at things and sweeps away all our religious, ideological, moral and social presuppositions.   Following the analysis of the writer Annie Le Brun, a specialist of Sade, the exhibition will be focusing on the revolution of representation opened up by the author’s writings. Topics addressed will be the ferocity and singularity of desire, deviation, extremes, the weird and the monstrous, desire as a principle of excess and imaginary recomposition of the world, through works by Goya, Gericault, Ingres, Rops, Rodin, Picasso…     Discover this exhibition during your stay at the Bellechasse Saint-Germain… From October 14th, 2014 till January 25th, 2015

ALAÏA in Musee Galliera

  • EXHIBITIONS

from September 28th, 2013 to January 26th, 2014 (from Tuesday to Sunday – 10am to 6pm)Designed for the reopening of the Galliera Museum, the exhibition provides the first retrospective in Paris dedicated to couturier Azzedine Alaïa.   After studying at the School of Fine Arts in Tunis, Alaïa arrived in Paris during the 1950s and quickly became a noble artisan himself, perfecting Parisian elegance. He mastered his craft by remaining close to his clients, whom he seduced with custom-made garments in the great tradition of Chic. In the 60s and 70s, he developed wardrobes for famous personalities such as Louise de Vilmorin, Arletty and Greta Garbo. He followed a creative method that allowed him to free himself from dictates and rules, confirming his talent as a visionary. He was recognised by the media in the 1980s as his work stood out as particularly noteworthy during that decade. A true plastic surgeon who only used his scissors on chiffon and leather, Alaïa sculpted a new body. By inventing novel morphologies for clothes through the simple play of seams, Alaïa became the couturier of a timeless body of work. His influence on contemporary fashion and all generations of creators and couturiers is fundamental.   Galliera Museum 10, avenue Pierre Ier de Serbie 75116 Paris RER C Pont de l’Alma station

Masculine – Masculine. The Nude Man in Art from 1800 to the Present Day. Orsay Museum

  • 17/09/2013
  • EXHIBITIONS

From September 24th, 2013 to January 02nd, 2014 (From 9:30am to 6:00pm from tuesday to sunday – till 9:45pm on thursday)While it has been quite natural for the female nude to be regularly exhibited, the male nude has not been accorded the same treatment. It is highly significant that until the show at the Leopold Museum in Vienna in the autumn of 2012, no exhibition had opted to take a fresh approach, over a long historical perspective, to the representation of the male nude. However, male nudity was for a long time, from the 17th to 19th centuries, the basis of traditional Academic art training and a key element in Western creative art. Therefore when presenting the exhibition Masculine / Masculine, the Musée d’Orsay, drawing on the wealth of its own collections and of other French public collections, aims to take an interpretive, playful, sociological and philosophical approach to exploring all aspects and meanings of the male nude in art.Given that the 19th century took its inspiration from 18th century classical art, and that this influence still resonates today, the Musée d’Orsay is extending its traditional historical range in order to draw a continuous arc of creation through two centuries down to the present day, and will include the whole range of techniques: painting, sculpture, graphic arts and, of course, photography, which will have an equal place in the exhibition.

Pompidou Center : Roy Lichtenstein exhibition

  • EXHIBITIONS

From 3rd July to 04th November 2013 (from 11 am to 9pm, until 11 pm every thursdays)   Today Roy Lichtenstein is regarded as one of the stars of the pop art movement as well as a great master of American painting. And yet, having been at the avant-garde of pop art for several years, Lichtenstein went much further. As soon as he began to reference artists and styles from art history in his works, he was very quickly perceived as a postmodern artist. Then, in the last years of his life, returning to the classic genres of the nude and the landscape, he became almost a traditional painter. So that Roy Lichtenstein is, today, a “classic” artist. Yet the power of his art is also an amused distance, critical without becoming cynical, that he applied to both himself and to art, from early on to the end of his life, the importance of which must be recognised. In one of his last interviews, Lichtenstein did not deny the interviewer’s first question: “Are you sure that you have never created a work completely devoid of all trace of malice, humour or irony?”
